Carryduff Parish Church has served its community for more than 60 years. Now its distinctive roof — one of the features that makes this church architecturally unique — needs to be replaced.
Through the generosity of our congregation and the support of the local community, we have already raised almost £100,000 towards an anticipated cost of £160,000.
A Church of Ireland was first established in Carryduff in the 1950s. Services were initially held in a local barn before moving to what is now our church hall.
The church building, as we know it today, was built in 1964. It was designed by the well-known Belfast architect Donald A. Shanks.
It is unique in the Church of Ireland tradition, with brightly coloured, kite-shaped windows and a very unusual self-supporting, hexagonal roof.
The church has been listed by the council as a building of architectural interest, primarily due to the uniqueness of the roof.
The character of the building is just as evident inside. The coloured windows, unusual geometry and open interior combine to create a church that is immediately recognisable.
One of the defining features of Carryduff Parish Church is its unusual self-supporting roof. Its geometry is clearly visible from inside the church, where the structure rises above the congregation and forms an important part of the building’s appearance.
While the church has been carefully maintained, there has been no major work carried out since it was built.
Over the last number of years, it has become obvious that the roof is showing signs of deterioration.
Those attending services have, on occasion, been greeted by a bucket catching drips or wet cushions on our pews.
This water ingress has been caused by cracked tiles and deteriorating roof felt.
The church vestry took the decision some years ago that the roof should be replaced.

Help Us Reach Our £160,000 Target
It is anticipated that the cost of replacement will be in the region of £160,000.
To date, through the generosity of our congregation and the support of the local community, we have raised almost £100,000.
As you can see, we still have a way to go to reach this target.
We intend to apply for a number of grants that will take us closer to the amount required.
